Santos Populares
On Tuesday, 12th of June – Santos Populares – it´s pre-celebrated St. Anthony, the patron of Lisbon, which is on the next day, 13.
Parade on Avenida da Liberdade, an important boulevard of Lisbon, big crowd of people, you can feel the festive athmosphere, the joy of people. The parades are also competitions between different residential districts of Lisbon - traditional dances, costumes, fanfares - it was interesting to watch.
I was there with Luciana, my Brazilian flat mate, and with a friend of hers, then, after the parade, we went to meet the rest of the group, which went directly to one of the traditional meeting places (in Largo da Graça, near to St. Jorge castle and Alfama, which is one of the traditional residential districts, together with Mouraria, Bica - places where the people use to go to party in this day) where people get out in the street, eat grilled sardines (traditional for this feast). People drink beer, sangria, they sing, some of them also dance traditional Portuguese dances, they are feeling good. I think that this atmosphere characterizes the best the style of the Portuguese - people that enjoy life, and yu can see, feel this not only during the feasts, which are btw numerous, but also in the rest of the time :-).
