Fado - traditional Portuguese music

Saturday evening around 11 we were heading to Bairro Alto...we wanted to go at a Fado house, because neither us, neither Gaurav, the Indian trainee, weren´t at Lisbon Fado yet. We found a place - it was called "Caldo Verde" where they were still some available places inside (because sometimes it´s hard to find available places at Fado shows). We entered and we sat at a table it was a break, so soon they started to sing again. All the singers had a very good voice and they were singing with a lot of passion. It was very interesting ...the atmosphere was extraordinary...

Fado is usually interpreted by one single singer (fadista), which is accompanied by a classic guitar and a Portuguese one. The word "fado" comes from Latin and it means "destiny". Fado doesn´t have a very well delimited origin, but most probably it appeared in the first half of the XIX century.

It´s said that the origin of Lisbon Fado is in the Mours´ songs, because both express melancholy, pain.

Nowadays Fado is sung for the tourists in the so called "Fado houses"; the best being in the traditional quarters Alfama, Mouraria, Madragoa and the well known Bairro Alto.

Fado in Caldo Verde

We loved it...This is the Lisbon Fado, different from the one from Coimbra, which isi the Fado of the students. It made us curious to listen in the future also Coimbra Fado...Also the guitars which they sing with differ: the Lisbon Portuguese guitar and the guitar of Coimbra.
